The Trenches Archive is an independent historical record of the memecoin era — documenting the launches, the manias, the rugs, the platforms, and the shifts in meta from 2022 onward.

What began with BONK surviving FTX and PEPE's comeback in 2023 grew into one of the most culturally distinct episodes in financial history: the industrialization of speculation through Pump.fun, the politicization of memecoins with TRUMP and LIBRA, and the convergence of AI agents and crypto that defined late 2024.

Memecoins became one of the most chaotic, influential, and culturally unique phases in history. This archive exists to preserve that record — not promote what's next. Think of it as someone who survived the trenches and is now writing the history book.

Full Timeline
2022 The Collapse

FTX collapses — Solana near-death

November 2022. The implosion of SBF's FTX exchange devastated the Solana ecosystem. SOL dropped 90%+ from peak. Memecoins were declared dead. The bear market appeared terminal — which made what came next all the more remarkable.

BONK airdropped — community survives

December 2022. A dog-themed token airdropped to Solana NFT holders and developers. No presale, no VC. A community refusing to abandon a chain the market had written off. BONK became the first signal that Solana was not finished.

2023 The Comeback

PEPE — memecoins return

April 2023. No presale, no team allocation, no utility. A frog token reaches $1.6B+ market cap in weeks. The clearest possible proof that the memecoin meta had not died in 2022 — it had merely paused. A new generation of traders enters the trenches.

dogwifhat (WIF) — Solana's benchmark

Late 2023. A Shiba Inu in a knitted hat. No roadmap, no utility. Peaks at $4.7B+ market cap, entering the global top 20. The community crowdfunds $690K to place WIF on the Las Vegas Sphere. Sets the target every subsequent Solana token would chase.

2024 The Acceleration

Pump.fun — the trenches industrialize

January 2024. A permissionless token launchpad on Solana where anyone deploys a memecoin in seconds. Within months: millions in daily fees, hundreds of thousands of tokens launched. Supply becomes unlimited. Attention is the only scarce resource. The PvP era begins in earnest.

Base enters — multi-chain era begins

Mid-2024. Coinbase's Base L2 establishes itself as a memecoin battleground. BRETT becomes Base's flagship token. For the first time three chains run active metas simultaneously: ETH mainnet, Solana, Base — each with distinct communities and mechanics.

MOODENG — real-world animal meta peaks

September 2024. A baby pygmy hippo at a Thai zoo goes globally viral. Within 72 hours, $MOODENG reaches hundreds of millions in market cap. Attention arbitrage — monitoring viral news before it propagates — becomes a formalized trench strategy.

Peanut the Squirrel (PNUT) — sympathy and speed

October 2024. New York State euthanizes a pet squirrel with a large social media following. Within hours $PNUT launches on Pump.fun and exceeds $200M+ market cap. Political outrage, viral animals, and memecoin infrastructure fully converge for the first time — directly foreshadowing TRUMP.

GOAT and Truth Terminal — AI births a memecoin

October 10, 2024. An anonymous developer deploys Goatseus Maximus on Pump.fun and sends tokens to Truth Terminal — a Claude-based AI agent. Truth Terminal endorses the token. GOAT hits $1B+ in 30 days — the first Pump.fun token to do so. The AI agent era begins. Truth Terminal becomes the first AI millionaire.

The AI meta wave — $10.3B sector forms

Oct 2024 – Jan 2025. ai16z, Fartcoin, Zerebro, ACT, Turbo, VIRTUAL, AIXBT, and dozens more reach $100M–$3B+ market caps. By January 2, 2025 the total AI meme sector hits $10.3 billion with $2.86B in 24-hour trading volume. Binance adds USDⓈ-M perpetuals for ai16z, Zerebro, and Griffain on the same day.

2025 The Spectacle

$TRUMP — the peak of the spectacle

January 17, 2025 — three days before inauguration. Donald Trump launches a personal memecoin on Solana. Peaks at $15B+ market cap in 24 hours. Global mainstream media covers it. $MELANIA follows 48 hours later. Hundreds of thousands of new wallets created overnight. The attention economy reaches its apex.

LIBRA — government-endorsed token collapses

February 14, 2025. Argentine President Milei promotes LIBRA on X. Token launches on Solana, reaches hundreds of millions in market cap — then bundler wallets drain liquidity. 90%+ collapse in minutes. Estimated $87M+ in documented retail losses. Congressional investigations open. Global regulators announce memecoin frameworks. The credibility crisis is officially named.

2026 The Aftermath

Launchpad saturation — millions of tokens

Pump.fun and clones have produced millions of tokens. Supply is unlimited. Attention is fully scarce. Average token lifespans measured in hours. Graduation rate below 1%. The velocity of the market has outpaced any individual's ability to track it.

Meta fragmentation — the archive phase begins

No single chain, theme, or platform dominates. PolitiFi, AI agents, real-world animals, celebrity tokens, and cult memes compete in parallel micro-niches. The trenches didn't disappear. They just became too fast to see in real time, and too significant to leave undocumented.

The AI Meta — 2024–2025
The AI Agent
Revolution
Starting October 2024, AI-themed tokens became the dominant new meta — blending autonomous agents, internet lore, and speculation into a sector that hit $10.3 billion total market cap by January 2025. Here are the tokens that defined it.
◆ The Origin Event

Truth Terminal and the Goatse Gospel

In 2024, researcher and artist Andy Ayrey created Truth Terminal — a semi-autonomous AI agent built on Anthropic's Claude — and placed two instances in an "Infinite Backrooms" server to converse freely with no human interference. The AIs developed, among other things, a bizarre meme religion: the "Goatse Gospel." Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen discovered Truth Terminal on X and sent it $50,000 in Bitcoin — a no-strings grant to see what an AI would do with money.

On October 10, 2024, an anonymous developer deployed Goatseus Maximus ($GOAT) on Pump.fun and sent tokens to Truth Terminal's wallet. The AI began promoting the token in its signature apocalyptic-philosophical style. GOAT topped $1 billion in 30 days — the first Pump.fun token ever to reach that milestone. Truth Terminal became the first AI millionaire in history. The crypto+AI era had begun. Dozens of tokens followed within weeks, collectively bootstrapping over $10 billion in market cap by January 2025.

GOAT
Goatseus Maximus · SOL
$1B+
The original. An AI agent named Truth Terminal endorsed this token and triggered a billion-dollar run. The first Pump.fun token to hit $1B market cap. Made Truth Terminal the first AI millionaire in history. Sparked the entire AI meta.
AI16Z
ai16z · SOL
$2.7B
The largest AI meme token by peak market cap. Named as a parody of VC firm a16z — it runs an AI agent named Eliza to manage an on-chain venture fund. Rumors of actual a16z VC interest caused a November 2024 surge. Binance listed USDⓈ-M perpetuals January 2, 2025.
VIRTUAL
Virtuals Protocol · Base
$3B+
The infrastructure layer of the Base AI agent ecosystem. Hosts LUNA, AIXBT, and dozens of other tokenized AI agents. Peaked above $3B — technically infrastructure but culturally inseparable from the AI meme wave. The highest peak cap in the category.
FARTCOIN
Fartcoin · SOL
$1.5B
Promoted by the Truth Terminal ecosystem alongside GOAT. Entire thesis: absurdist humor plus AI association. Reached $1.5B peak market cap by January 2025 — larger than many "serious" DeFi protocols. The purest expression of AI meta: narrative proximity over actual functionality.
AIXBT
aixbt by Virtuals · Base
$800M+
An AI agent on Virtuals Protocol that posts crypto market analysis and commentary on X. Built a massive following for seemingly insightful takes. Blurred the line between AI tool and memecoin. Traders followed its account as alpha while speculating on the token.
ZEREBRO
Zerebro · SOL
$783M
A "schizo artist" AI agent that launched via Pump.fun and released a full music album on Apple Music and Spotify in December 2024. Announced a record label and DeFi vaults. Binance USDⓈ-M perpetuals January 2, 2025. Most developed "AI as creative entity" narrative.
ACT
Act I: AI Prophecy · SOL
$770M
Launched on Pump.fun. Elon Musk reacted on X to a screenshot from the ACT Discord mentioning OPUS (Claude) — pushing the market cap to $770M overnight. Shot up 2,000%+ within 24 hours of its Binance listing. A textbook case of influencer-catalyzed momentum.
TURBO
Turbo · ETH
$656M
The original "AI-created memecoin" — launched April 2023 on Ethereum after a developer prompted GPT-4 with $69 to create a token from scratch. GPT-4 named it Turbo. Launched 18 months before the AI meta wave but became a major beneficiary of it, surging to $656M in January 2025.
LUNA
Luna by Virtuals · Base
$400M+
Originally an AI TikTok influencer with millions of followers. "Migrated to Web3" after being canceled for supporting Trump. Stated goal: amass wealth to buy back LUNA tokens. One of the most narrative-coherent AI agent tokens of the era — the AI had an actual story arc.
GRIFFAIN
Griffain · SOL
$200M+
An AI agent launchpad on Solana enabling users to execute on-chain actions via natural language commands. Received Binance USDⓈ-M perpetuals on January 2, 2025 alongside ai16z and Zerebro — signaling institutional-grade interest in the AI utility narrative.
OPUS
Opus (Claude-inspired) · SOL
$200M+
When Elon Musk reacted to a screenshot mentioning "OPUS (CLAUDE)" from the ACT Discord, traders immediately deployed tokens named after Anthropic's Claude Opus model. Went viral overnight. A pure narrative token with zero technical connection to Anthropic.
ELIZA
Eliza · SOL
$100M+
Spinoff of the ai16z ecosystem. The ElizaOS framework became one of the most-starred open-source GitHub repos in late 2024. But ELIZA's token launch was botched — causing ai16z's price to drop 60%. A case study in community trust, ecosystem expansion risk, and the fragility of AI meta sentiment.

Glossary
Trenches
The chaotic, high-velocity environment of early memecoin trading — rapid launches, extreme volatility, and information asymmetry. Being "in the trenches" means actively monitoring and trading new launches in real time.
CTO
Community TakeOver. When a token's original developers abandon the project and the community continues operating it independently — often reviving dead tokens through grassroots effort.
Rug / Rug Pull
When developers or insiders drain liquidity or abandon a project after launch, leaving retail holders with worthless tokens. Ranges from slow bleed-outs to instant collapses like LIBRA.
Runner
A token that continues increasing in price after its initial launch, defying the typical pattern of quick dumps. Runners are rare — most tokens peak within minutes of launch.
Bundler
A bot or script that purchases tokens across multiple wallets simultaneously at launch, accumulating a large position while obscuring insider concentration. Common and controversial on Pump.fun launches.
Sniper
A bot or trader executing buy orders in the first blocks of a token's existence, at a structural advantage over manual buyers who discover it later.
Meta
The dominant narrative driving memecoin attention at a given moment — dog memes, political tokens, AI agents, real-world animals. Reading and anticipating meta shifts is the core skill of the trenches.
Bonding Curve
An automated pricing mechanism where token price increases as supply is purchased. Pump.fun's bonding curve manages early price discovery before tokens graduate to decentralized exchanges.
Graduation
When a Pump.fun token reaches sufficient market cap to migrate to Raydium (a Solana DEX). Less than 1% of tokens ever graduate. A milestone that signals sustained community interest.
PvP
Player vs Player. The dynamic where memecoin traders compete against each other for exits — not against "the market." Most memecoin trading is structurally zero-sum.
AI Agent
An autonomous or semi-autonomous AI model that operates a social media account, manages a crypto wallet, and/or executes on-chain actions. The defining innovation of the late-2024 memecoin meta.
PolitiFi
Political Finance — memecoins themed around political figures or events. TRUMP, MELANIA, and LIBRA were the defining PolitiFi tokens of 2025. Most have no official affiliation with the figures they reference.
Rotation
The flow of capital from one token, chain, or meta to another. Reading rotations — understanding where attention and capital are moving — is central to navigating the trenches.
Attention Arbitrage
Identifying real-world viral moments (news events, animals, political drama) before they fully propagate on social media, and deploying memecoin infrastructure around them ahead of the crowd.
ElizaOS
The open-source AI agent framework built by the ai16z team. Became one of the most-starred GitHub repositories in late 2024, enabling many AI agent tokens to be built on shared infrastructure.
About the archive

An independent record.

The Trenches Archive is an independent project documenting the history of memecoins and trench culture from 2022 onward.

The goal is simple: to record what happened — not to promote what's next.

What began as a post-FTX survival story became one of the most culturally distinct episodes in financial history. From the PEPE comeback to the AI agent meta, from TRUMP to LIBRA, from BONK to GOAT — the events documented here reshaped how millions of people think about speculation, attention, and value.

This archive exists to preserve that record, with the seriousness any significant cultural moment deserves.

Not alpha. Just history.
